About this Project

Religious Trauma Verbatim Project
The Religious Trauma Verbatim Project is dedicated to documenting and sharing personal stories of individuals who have experienced religious trauma. Our project aims to provide a platform for people to share their experiences and raise awareness about the psychological and emotional impact of religious trauma. Through the power of storytelling and firsthand accounts, the verbatim play seeks to raise awareness and promote understanding of this important issue.

Verbatim theatre is a form of documentary theatre in which plays are constructed from the precise words spoken by people interviewed about a particular event or topic. It is a powerful way to explore real-life stories and bring them to the stage.

Religious Trauma continues to be overlooked as a legitimate concern within our society. Choosing to prioritize the good that may stem from religious circles, the bad is overlooked and the victims are left feeling isolated and alone in their pain. This project is an attempt to make us feel less alone in our experiences, bring accountability to the ways in which religion is weaponized, and address the impacts of this through the modality of theatre and storytelling. If you have stories that you want to share, I would love to hear them and give you a platform to make your voice heard.

This project will be utilized as a Field Education opportunity as part of my Master of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. It will combine voices from my home state as well as my new state, provide collaboration with professionals in the fields I am pursuing, and encourage reflection on meaning-making and healing.
